Relationship Quality Test
Think about one person in your life. Ask yourself:

  • Does this relationship inspire me to be my best?
  • Does this relationship provide 100% nonjudgmental support?
  • Does this relationship bring out my worst qualities?
  • Do I feel emotionally energized or drained from this relationship?
  • Do I feel better about myself after I am with this person?

P.s. You gotta love yourself before you love others.
P.p.s. I can help!

“Chere, Just wanted to tell you how much I ALWAYS enjoy reading what you write in our Nutrition Entrepreneurs Ventures magazine. Your enthusiasm and love of life is contagious and I know you are deeply affecting the lives of those you touch! I especially liked your Step Five: Create Space for What You Want. I remember you telling me something like that a year ago or so. Not necessarily throwing out the negative ideas, but tasks in life that were cluttering things up. You are always so inspiring.”
—Julie Beyer, MA, RD, CWPC

Chere note: Julie you took your own health challenges and with positivity have made a difference in thousands of people’s lives. As a fellow Registered Dietitian I thank you.

Julie gives lots of talks to people with interstitial cystitis and many of them are afraid to do anything in life. She lets them know if you want to fly to Hawaii, then do it! She tells them even if you can't eat all of the food, you can appreciate it! That was a borrowed pineapple sundae!!

“Morning dear friend,I always smile when I get through reading your uplifting letter. I also wanted to tell you that in 1994 I took then 13 year old Carl Hensel (I took all my grands on a trip at 13) on a canoe trip on the Rogue River for a week. It was awesome. I now have 13 grands (some are married) and 3 GREATS ! I have to tell you what I have asked the GREATS to call me (& they do)"
—Gran Marnier

Chere’s note: Marne you are Gran Marnier.

Glad you were with all your grans canoeing the Rogue River. Gary and I took the easier route and jet boated it in September and saw tons of Eagles. You are full of zest for life and are my role model. I always wonder what is Gran Marnier going to do next?

Great Gran Marnier and the next generations. 2 of the 13 grands and 2 of the GREAT grands...Devon 7 Ainsley on the left and Lesley & Griffin on the right

I invite you to join the Savor Your Life Today Fan Page. Tips, and recipes to attract a healthy happy life. This month your name will be entered to win a 5 Ingredient for Healthy Living Cookbook just in time for you holiday entertaining. With only five ingredients...less stress and less mess in your kitchen.

I miss him. I miss Grandpa Howard a lot. This will be our second Christmas season without him. I miss his quiet wisdom. He usually sat in his comfy blue leather recliner or at the kitchen table. He was pretty quiet, but was listening and observing and when he did talk, he was full of quiet wisdom. I miss watching his hands. (I never told that to anyone before.) Gifted, he could make anything out of wood, fix anything and create anything. And I mean anything. With the help of his creative equally gifted wife Ady they would do anything. I miss watching him mentor and help Danielle and Brett on their many projects while being a role model for living a life of honesty, integrity and good work. Howard and I had a good relationship. We talked about many things. As a manager for grocery stores, we had the food thing in common.

Brett was only four in this picture. His grandchildren loved being with him because Grandpa Howard made you feel special. He patiently helped you with any project even when you were only four and needed help with your Tinker Toys.

I am grateful I spent time with him but not enough time. Regrets yes. I did not go home to Green Bay enough. Why? Cause I was “crazy busy.” We used to be busy but now with the ability to be “on 24/7” we are crazy busy.

Brett and Grandpa Howard - Christmas 2010. Grandpa and Brett in Grandpa’s comfy blue recliner. Brett and all his grandkids joined him many times on his recliner. Wish we would have known it was our last Christmas with Grandpa Howard.

Ed Diener, aka “Dr. Happiness”, is a leading researcher in positive psychology. His 25 years of studies have discovered that strong social relationships are your number one predictor of happiness. Close relationships can act as medicine. Study after study has shown that relationships and social support are crucial and can even influence cancer and heart disease. It makes sense. We are social human beings so in order to live a whole healthy life we need to be connected to community

Research on widows and divorced people shows substantial declines in well-being right before and after the loss of a significant other. People may understand that close friends are related to their happiness they do not realize they are NECESSARY for happiness as well as for optimal health. Many people focus on wealth when they pursue happiness, but research suggests that social relationships are more important than material prosperity. It is a mistake to value money over social relationships.*

The holidays are the perfect season to boost your happiness and the happiness of others. Could you give a better holiday gift than your time and energy to the ones you love and care about? Three gifts that don’t cost a cent.

The Gift of Empathy
Empathy is simple…two words… respectful understanding. Is there a better gift than being understood? It has been said, “To judge is to not love!” Give up judgment and knowing what is best for your family and friends…unless they ask.

The Gift of Positive Energy
Are you an energy drain for people; a giant warning of who not to be or a shining example and energy charge? What you focus on gets bigger and bolder. Focus on abundance and give it to your friends and family.

The Gift of Listening
Be in the present and really listen. No interrupting, no daydreaming, no planning what you are going to say. Just listening. And don’t forget to listen for what is not being said.

Relationships are an investment of your time and energy so you need to invest wisely. Life is a string of moments which become days and the days become months. And before we know it another year of “crazy busy” has passed. What will it take to help you decide to value social relationships over money? Your heart knows the answer. Your friends and family are silently waiting.

I wish for you, my dear Taste Life reader, abundant happiness this holiday season. Remember life is a gift but you can’t be too busy to open it. I can’t wait to hear how you gift people your presence this holiday season on our blog.

Balsamic Green Beans

This recipe from the the 5 Ingredients for Healthy Living Cookbook is is a fancy version of plain old green beans. As a Registered dietitian for the past 34 years, (I have loved every single year), I would bet I have read 1000 client’s food diaries. And, everyone’s favorite veggies are always beans and corn. If you are tired of the “same old, same old” green beans this recipe is bursting with flavor from the balsamic vinegar and honey combination. And, it takes only five minutes to prepare. Gotta love that!  This recipe is perfect for everyday and “fancy days.” It would be a great addition to your holiday table too.

  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 1 tsp. olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp. minced onion (to save time you can use green onions)
  • 2 Tbsp. balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tsp. honey
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 1/8 tsp. black pepper

Bring pot of water to a boil and cook green beans 4 minutes. Drain. Combine balsamic vinegar and honey in small bowl. Heat olive oil in large skillet over medium heat and sauté onion 1 minute. Add green beans, salt and pepper and vinegar mixture, stirring to combine. Cook until beans are tender. Adjust seasonings according to your own taste. (Our dad would dump on more salt!)

Makes four servings.

Where is Chere savoring life?

Savoring is a quality that happy people naturally have in abundance.

Savoring = to mindfully engage in thoughts or behaviors that heighten the effect of positive events on positive feelings. There are 3 temporal forms of Savoring: (1) Anticipatory (2) In the Moment and (3) Reminiscent. We can savor a positive event before it happens by getting excited in preparation for it, we can savor the positive event as it event as it occurs and we can savor a positive event by remembering it. What are you savoring today?

How lucky are we that Grandma Lily said people will always be sick and have to eat and we are both Registered Dietitians. We love going to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics annual expo. This year it as in Philly and we discovered that Philly is a great foodie town.

Happy 83rd Birthday Mom from Cheryl, Laurel, Michele, Michael, and Rachele. People always smile when they hear that our names rhyme!

I gave up my idea of eating less white foods and white flour when I saw this buttercream cake that my sister Michele bought for mom. Wouldn’t you?

Scott and Tim Thoma worked on our deck after Gary tore his quadriceps tendon off his knee last summer. With gratitude, we served up a bootiful Halloween dinner to Julie, Stephanie, Scott and Tim and their children.

So happy this empty nest could plan a kid Halloween party again. What fun to have a contest to see which dad could be a mummy first. Afterwards they really liked riping up the toilet paper into little pieces. Funny how you enjoy all of this so much more when your kids are all grown. Savor the little stuff. The little stuff is the big stuff.
