  1. Simplify – Ask a friend to tell you what you need to dump.
  2. Become SELFish – Make a list of the top 3 things you do each week and don’t like, and stop doing them.
  3. Use Planned Abandonment – Deliberately abandon something you have been doing for a long time and are not fulfilled with doing it anymore.
  4. Relax Standards – Look at your standards..do they all need to be so high?
  5. Get 7 hours of sleep – Your sleep needs are biologically determined, not “I have too much to do I can’t get to bed” determined. Life is harder on less than 7 hours of sleep.


Chere, The plan worked great! I did the eliptical for 30 min and did 4 lifting machines. I even documented my lifting weight so I can start my lifting plan! Just got back in the office and I'm ready to work. It is wonderful how my mind is ready to handle the days work now :)

I am not normally very political but have been caught up in the dealings on TV and all the political ads and can't help but feel like the country is at a tipping point…I really want to feel at peace with myself, my family, my stability and my future but can't help but feel some anxiety when I think about where I am and what the future may or may not hold. I am curious to get your thoughts and see if I am in a funk or if I need to change things to improve my perspective on the future.”

You are not alone. I would guess many people are worried about doom and gloom these days. People don’t feel like they are in charge of their lives anymore. I also worry that Brett and Danielle will not be able to continue to live the life Gary and I have enjoyed with home ownership and affordable health care. Here are 3 practical ideas to dump the gloom and doom.

Attraction Action Steps

When I catch myself looking at what my future may NOT hold I work on flipping the switch from lack to abundance by using positive beliefs and the law of attraction. Rhonda Byrne’s 2006 self-help book, “The Secret,” made positive thinking very popular. But the problem I often see is that positive thinking only works if actions go along with it. Did you ever notice the last six letters of the word attraction is the word action? First, think about what you want in your life. You mentioned peace and stability. What action steps can you take to be more in charge to feel peace and stability? Remember when you “use” attraction you must take action.

Roasted Broccoli

This recipe from the the 5 Ingredients for Healthy Living Cookbook is is a zesty new spin on broccoli if you are getting tired of the same old steamed broccoli. Add your favorite fresh herb and some lemon zest. The tarragon in my garden is at least ten years old and tastes great on your plate and looks great in your flower arrangements. Gotta love double duty foods!

  • 1 large head broccoli, cut into 4 inch florets (1 1/2 lbs)
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp. chopped fresh tarragon
  • 1 tsp. lemon zest
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper

Preheat oven to 400F. Toss broccoli with olive oil, salt and pepper in shallow roasting pan. Roast 25 minutes, or until crisp tender and lightly browned. Turn broccoli halfway through cooking time. Sprinkle with tarragon and lemon zest and adjust seasonings before serving. Makes six servings.

Nutrition: Nutrition analysis per serving: 57 Calories; 3.7 gm Protein; 3.8 gm Fat; 2 gm Carbohyrate; 190 mg Sodium

In only ten minutes you can get this tasty vegie dish ready for the oven. What is easier than doing a little cutting and throwing it in the oven?

Danielle and David came home last weekend. Dinner is easy when the recipes are only five ingredients. Danielle whipped up the roasted broccoli while Gary grilled our grass fed rib eye steaks with a Dijon garlic marinade. Looking back I believe I centered the entire weekend around food. In this house food is for sure love!

Savoring is a quality that happy people naturally have in abundance.

Savoring = to mindfully engage in thoughts or behaviors that heighten the effect of positive events on positive feelings. There are 3 temporal forms of Savoring: (1) Anticipatory (2) In the Moment and (3) Reminiscent. We can savor a positive event before it happens by getting excited in preparation for it, we can savor the positive event as it event as it occurs and we can savor a positive event by remembering it. What are you savoring today?

I about died and went to heaven being able to cook in the Culinary Institute of America Greystone kitchens. Chef William was showing Charlotte how to roll the spring rolls.

Rice Paper Rapped Salad Rolls filled with pork, shrimp, bean sprouts and mint Chef William thought I needed lots of practice and made me roll and roll and roll more spring rolls. With him watching me I was more nervous than when I start a presentation.

Gary is continuously working on his bucket list. We drove the California coast from San Francisco to Gold Beach, Oregon where we jet boated in the Rogue River. The scenery was gorgeous. This picture shows what we do most trips. The kids and I patiently wait while Gary takes his hundreds of pictures. We don’t mind cause he usually drives!

What could be better than the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco? Eating a Hot Fudge Sundae at Ghiradelli’s. Not once but twice in one week! I loved the sourdough bread so much I cracked my temporary crown.
