I often ask people what they want. The top three answers are usually “I want to be happy, to lose weight or win the lottery.”  Everyone wants to feel fantastic about themselves and their lives. People want to live with a sense of accomplishment and living on purpose.  Women that I coach express often a desire for confidence. Confidence is really all about our beliefs.

Everyone focuses on a goal. The goal is where you want to be. I want to lose 25 pounds. Or, I want a new job.  But have you really decided to lose that weight or get a new job? Really? The power is in your decision. Your decision is a conscious and real choice, not a wish but total commitment.  Mary, a coaching client hired me to help her start her Wellcoach ®Coaching Practice. She was struggling with getting out of bed in the morning. She stated, “I am not a morning person. The first word I learned how to spell was bed.”   I asked her, “What do you want?” I want to use my sleep apnea machine. Why? “I need to feel fresh!”

Fruited Wild Rice Salad

For the past five months I have been working on a nutrition workshop for Anoka Hennepin School District and have been consciously eating more whole grains. (We need to eat three servings of whole grains a day.)  This salad is perfect as it combines whole grains and fruit and doesn’t “taste healthy!”

I served this to my Dinner Club and noticed they all “cleaned their plates.”

2 cups cooked wild rice
2 Tbsp. olive oil
2 Tbsp raspberry vinegar
1/2 cup dried cherries
1 cup green grapes, cut in half
1 cup red grapes, cut in half
1/4 cup toasted slivered almonds
Clementines or orange sections for garnish

Combine all ingredients. Allow to sit for 1 hour before you serve it. Save some dried cherries to garnish the top. Garnish with orange sections.

Makes 8 1/2-cup servings.

Where is Chere savoring life?

Savoring is a quality that happy people naturally have in abundance.

Savoring = to mindfully engage in thoughts or behaviors that heighten the effect of positive events on positive feelings. There are 3 temporal forms of Savoring: (1) Anticipatory (2) In the Moment and (3) Reminiscent. We can savor a positive event before it happens by getting excited in preparation for it, we can savor the positive event as it event as it occurs and we can savor a positive event by remembering it. What are you savoring today?

I celebrated Easter in Milwaukee this year. I got to eat Easter dinner two times and helped give Laurie a surprise birthday party. The day started off interesting with the ham not fitting in the crock pot. Regardless, many reminiscent savory moments from that weekend.
