The Science Secret to Being Happy or Crabby
Where is Chere Speaking?

  1. Enjoy the bounty that summer offers.
Summer is perfect to try new veggies and fruits.
  2. Limit added sugars.
Sweeteners are found in many foods, and when consumed in moderation, often serve a useful role in making nutrient rich foods, like yogurt and flavored milk, more palatable for children. Table sugar, honey and high fructose corn syrup contain the same calories per gram, and are nutritionally equivalent. To learn more about sweeteners, visit www.SweetSurprise.com.
  3. Pack simple snacks.
Individual ready-to-eat servings such as low fat yogurt or string cheese and snacks that travel well in small, sealable bags like fruit, nuts, and vegetables work well for kids.
  4. Make mealtime fun.
Summertime favorites, such as picnics, barbecues, and campfire cookouts are not be missed. To balance out the occasional summer treat, make healthy food choices readily available and enjoyable for young eaters.
  5. Don’t forget liquids.
Keeping kids well hydrated during the summer heat is essential. Water, calcium-rich and fortified beverages are sound choices.

Who do I want to be today?

Since 1999 I have had a hard time describing what transpires during a coaching session. Coaching is an experiential process as well as an intellectual one. Talking about coaching isn't the same thing as being coached. Click here or call me at 952.937.5697 to reserve your complimentary, no obligation, 30-minute Coaching Session. If you are ready to take action towards obtaining the life you really want this is your first step.

Experience coaching first hand and create an action plan that will help you move forward with your goals and dreams. I guarantee one tip, tool, question or strategy that will give you more energy, balance, focus, happiness or health.

“Hello Cheery Chere ~ Why would I need to schedule a coaching session when all I need to do each month is read your newsletter?!? Your colorful newsletter perks me up, and teaches me something new every time!

I liked the 5 tips for a successful marriage – As I was paying the bills last night, I pointed out to my husband that there wasn’t enough money in his business checkbook to cover all of his bills and I could swear that he was going to quit his business this morning and call the welfare office since he “doesn’t know what he is working for!” – goofy boy! However, my beloved boss left our campus a little over a week ago to take on the position of Provost at the U.S. Naval Academy (his dream job!) – so I have been pouting about that for WEEKS and my hubby doesn’t seem to understand what the big deal is! My new boss started last Monday - he is a great guy and he will be just fine, but it’s just different.

Blurb from your newsletter: Everyone is worried about money in these trying times. But does money truly buy happiness? Results of a global happiness survey from the Nielson Company show that for men happiness and their satisfaction with money in their wallet are closely related. However, a woman’s happiness is more related to the quality of friendships and relationships with family, her boss and her co-workers. It is easier for women to be happier in these trying financial times. Thanks for keeping me on your mailing list!
Your smile is contagious…keep smiling!”

“Chere,I cannot tell you how much I enjoy your emails! You are such a positive person.....a person I would love to spend time with! You are an inspiration to so many and I am happy to hear Dad's Birthday Surprise Party was a GREAT ONE! Cherish the memories and family......I lost my Dad six years ago and family gatherings are just not the same.”
—Nancy Seth

Chere’s note: I met Nancy several years ago. She is the founder of the Midwest Timeshare Owners Group. The next meeting is in Duluth, MN on September 26, 2009. The group goal is to trade timeshare weeks among members and share any and all info regarding timesharing.
If you want to attend her the Duluth meeting, call her at 612-756-1269 or send her an email to jakeandnancy@msn.com. She owns several timeshare weeks. All the timeshares she owns were purchased on the “resale market.” Gary and I fell in love with timeshares on our honeymoon in 1982 and bought our first timeshare in Waikiki Beach, Honolulu, Hawaii. (We didn’t think about airfare back then..must have been that honeymoon love thing hey!)

“Sounds like you are one happy gal. So am I. We have a new baby today. Lily Samantha is here. Linda called me from Megan’s room right after she was born. I am not even sure how much she weighed, but I do know she is strong. She was yelling "Hi Great Grandma ." Keep in touch, Aunt Doris.

“Chere, since our chat yesterday my perspective on life has changed.

Last night I got my workout done. It was short and I didn't get a chance for a shower (yuck), but I was pleased that I made time for myself. Since our meeting yesterday I am listening to my body more. Last night I was working on the computer around 8:30 and feeling tired. I kept trying to put it off, but finally said to myself, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. So I went to bed and did some reading (more me time) before falling asleep. Even today I am listening to what my body wants to eat, not all that fried food, but a simple egg salad sandwich. Cutting back on the caffeine.” —P

Chocolate Covered Bananas

We ate leftovers for dinner which Danielle doesn’t care for AT all. She was still “looking” for something to eat. I suggested we try this fruit dessert.

6 ripe and firm bananas
12 ounce package of milk chocolate chips
2 Tbsp. vegetable oil (not olive)
Chopped pecans

Line a small pan that will fit into your freezer with waxed paper or parchment paper.
Peel bananas and insert a Popsicle or craft stick halfway into each one. Freeze bananas for 30 minutes. Combine 6 ounces of the chips* and 1 tbsp of the oil in a 2 cup measuring cup. Microwave for 1 to 2 minutes on medium or until chips are melted. Stir every 30 seconds. Stir until smooth.

Place sprinkles in a pie plate. Place banana in measuring cup and with a spoon coat the entire banana with chocolate. Place banana in sprinkles and gently pat more sprinkles on the top. Do the same with the chopped nuts. Place bananas back on baking sheet and freeze until chocolate is firm, at least 1 hour or overnight.

*I melt the chocolate in two batches so the chocolate doesn’t get hard.

Today, I asked my new (second coaching call) coaching client Barb, “How’s your energy today?” She replied, “I’m better. I was going to be crabby today. I looked at my coaching note and decided to flip the switch to being positive.” I asked her what coaching note she was talking about. She replied, “The note with the question, Who do I want to be today? I told myself I want to be self confident, energized, positive and at peace. When I was crabby I was telling myself, I am too fat and have too much to do! It is amazing that I can flip the switch and everything changes and that you can choose to be whoever you want to be.” I asked her what got her crabby. She stated, “My husband made me oatmeal raisin cookies last night and I ate 12 of them.” I told her the day my bridegroom would take the time to make me cookies I would die and go to heaven happy! No way, Jose! Gary does a lot for me, however in 30 years he has not baked me cookies once!

The first coaching call we coached about how our beliefs are just beliefs and they not a fact; rather just our belief in that moment. Our beliefs create our emotions and that creates our action. We used my favorite success formula:

Event > Belief > Emotion > Behavior

The event was her bridegroom baked her oatmeal raisin cookies. Her first positive belief was, “What a kind, wonderful man. I am lucky to have a husband make me cookies,” which created her positive emotion of being happy. This state of happiness created the thinking and behavior of, “I will be nice to him and eat his cookies.” We can flip the switch to negative beliefs and negative emotions. The negative belief was “There is too much sugar, cholesterol and fat in these cookies, which will make me fat.” This created the negative emotion of guilt, anger and sadness, which created the negative behavior of feeling sorry for herself and eating more cookies.” You are responsible for your beliefs, which creates either your positive or negative emotion.

I just returned from the National Wellness Conference in Stevens Point, WI. Ground breaking research by Dr. Barbara Fredrickson, a social psychologist, concluded that positive emotions create our happiness. It is not about money, status, marriage…it is all about positive emotions. Her research reveals how positive emotions can tip the scales toward a life of happiness and flourishing. Her research has clearly demonstrated that positive emotions are not a luxury. Rather, for us to perform and function, we need enough positive emotions in each day. The problem is that positive emotions are like butterflies..they come and go throughout the day. And negative emotions stick to us like Velcro. Dr. Fredrickson suggests that we need a 3:1 ratio; 3 positive emotions for every one negative emotion. Eighty percent of Americans have 2:1 To discover your positivity ratio take this two minute quiz.

You are responsible for what you think. Every day you have a choice. Ask yourself, “Do I want to be crabby or happy today?’” Monitor your thoughts. Here are a few ideas to turn your negative thoughts into positive action oriented ones: Meditation, doing something for someone, yoga, singing, moving your body, listening to music, or having an attitude of gratitude. It is entirely up to you. Decide you will be happy and immediately your positive emotions will shine through. In a span of only three months, you can positively change who you are. Imagine that! It is so simple! However - not always easy. Do it anyway! Remember life is easy and we make it hard. Aren’t you glad you are “done” with hard! Here to add value to your amazing life. Let me know how! Love, Chere
