I surprised Gary with a lobster dinner for our 1/2 anniversary on July 2nd. Would you celebrate your anniversary on January 2nd? I am often too tired to look at him, let alone go out for a meal. One of our first vacations as newlyweds was to Camden, Maine, where ate lobster in the rough for the first time. We took Brett and Danielle to Camden and the “whole lobster thing” grossed them out so much I am certain neither of them will ever eat lobster!

I love being married and often say marriage is just like a website — you are never done working on it. For years and years I carried around a small typed piece of paper in my wallet with these tips written on it. Notice there is nothing about romance or passion.

  1. An ability to change and tolerate change.
  2. A willingness to live with the things one can’t change. (The BIGGEST challenge for sure).
  3. Trust between the partners.
  4. A balance of power.
  5. A shared history that is cherished.

Everyone focuses on their scale, but what creates the number on your scale? Your metabolism! We have a free class just for you to get you in shape this summer.

Resting metabolic rate helps determine the amount of calories your body burns while at rest. When you determine this number and take into consideration how many calories you are burning during exercise you are able to know exactly the ideal amount of calories you should be taking in during the day to support your goal (weight loss, weight gain or weight maintenance.) Identifying your ideal heart rate training range that you should be spending time in during your cardiovascular exercise ensures that you are not working too hard and that you are working hard enough. Basically it takes all the guess-work out of cardiovascular exercise and provides you a plan to make sure you are always burning a combination of fat and carbohydrates during exercise, not just carbs (sugars)!

Spend one hour of your time on July 13, 2009 from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm to save you hours and hours of working out and not seeing a difference in your scale. Nate Cermak, a Metabolic Specialist and Certified Personal Trainer is offering this free heart rate training / metabolism class at the Lifetime Fitness Chanhassen Club to Chere’s clients and friends. Send Chere an email to register and get directions to the class. Register by July 12, 2009.

Pineapple Orange Infused Red and Blue Fruit Salad

The 4th of July begs cooks to dish up red, white and blue food. I wanted to prepare a salad ahead of time so I would really enjoy this holiday. However, we have fruit salad almost every day in the summer. This recipe sparked up the 4th of July holiday with it’s citrus infusion. You could use any fruits you enjoy…peaches, nectarines and mangoes all would be scrumptious. Remember we need 4 1/2 cups of fruits and veggies a day. This recipe is an easy way to “eat nutrition.”

6 ounce can pineapple juice
2 pints fresh blueberries, washed and drained
1 1/2 pound fresh strawberries, washed, and sliced
1 1/2 pound fresh cherries, de-pitted and cut in half
1 cup orange juice
1/3 cup sugar

Place the fruit in a large bowl. Pour pineapple juice to cover the fruit and infuse for 1 to 2 hours before you are serving the salad. (I use about 1/2 of the can and drink the rest!)

In a small saucepan, combine the orange juice and sugar. Bring to a boil and cook until the liquid is reduced to about 1/2 cup. This can be made ahead and kept cooled in the fridge. Drain the fruit mixture and add the orange juice reduction. Garnish with flag pics and a smile on your heart thankful for your freedom.

The first time I heard, “You are way too happy” it took my breath away. Way too happy! How do you define that? Since then, two more people have said the same thing. “You are just too happy!” I no longer quit breathing. Instead I ask myself, “What is happy?” Better yet, what is too happy? We all want happiness. Ever notice that some people seem to be happy and no matter what, other people are never happy.

Everyone is worried about money in these trying times. But does money truly buy happiness? Results of a global happiness survey from the Nielson Company show that for men happiness and their satisfaction with money in their wallet are closely related. However, a woman’s happiness is more related to the quality of friendships and relationships with family, her boss and her co-workers. It is easier for women to be happier in these trying financial times.

Scientific research also suggests that happier people tend to have good families, friends and supportive relationships. The father-son team of Ed Diener and Robert Biswas-Diener have studied people all over the world to find out what makes them happy. Make Friends, Treasure Family is one of their top ten scientifically proven strategies to get happy! It is not about being surrounded by shallow acquaintances, but rather deeper relationships. Diener suggests, “We don’t just need relationships but we need close ones.” In one study conducted by Diener, the happiest 10 percent of the participants all had strong supportive relationships. A strong social network will not guarantee you happiness, but it was a requirement to be in the happiest group.

My coaching clients have heard me say, “Relationships oxygenate life or they take our breath away!” When you need “people oxygen” who do you turn to? My thoughts immediately go to “the kids.” Being the oldest of five, my three sisters and brother were always the “kids” to me. When I was hurt by a friend’s remarks or not included in going to a movie, I would hear my mom say, “Friends may come and go but your family is always here for you.” Whatever I thought…I just want friends. Funny, how as I get closer and closer to getting my AARP card I care about the values of my family. And, darn it anyway, mom was right. The “five kids” just got done throwing dad a surprise 80th birthday party on Flag Day. Almost more fun then the actual party was our telephone conference call party planning meetings on Monday nights. Can we really surprise dad? Think our cousins will really come? I teach teleclasses for 250 people and those party planning meetings were opposite of all the teleclass etiquette I enjoy. One of the calls, I suggested that just one person talk at a time. Sister Michele said, “That would be no fun” and they all continued to talk and laugh at once…oh well…Memories.

Life is all about memories. Stop and think about what are your happiest memories? I bet they involved people you loved and cared about most. I often think about people in my life being like fabric. My richest memories of my most favorite people (like my “kids” - my brother and 3 sisters) are like thick, rich, and warm burgundy velvet. It feels like their support and the memories we create together wrap around my body and support me in the good days and not so good days. They listen to me. (Remember, I love to talk!) They appreciate me. They acknowledge me. They respect me for who I am and they don’t try to change me. On the other hand, people who judge me, try to change me and try to control me are like rough, scratchy burlap fabric. They judge me. They tolerate me.

So, if you want to be happier take a relationship inventory.

Ask yourself these 5 questions:

  1. Can I be the real me when I with this person?
  2. Does this person share my top three values?
  3. Do I use my gifts when I am with this person?
  4. Do I feel I can honestly say what I want to say to this person without being judged?
  5. Do I have integrity (doing what is right physically and emotionally) when I am with this person?

When you remove the “burlap people” from your life, you will have the time and energy for connections with people who touch your heart and make you feel like velvet. Who do you want to have more of in your life? Your call to action is to call them today. And, remember if you want to be loved, you need to show up lovable!

Here with energized abundance and to add value to your life; just let me know how! What are you waiting for? Love, Chere!
