Meditation is fantastic for overall health. Every cell in your body is affected. During meditation your body isn’t flooded by the stress hormones that kick you into the “fight or flight” mode. Studies have also shown that meditation helps heal the body and strengthen the immune system. The science of silence is waiting for you!

The process is simple. Mediate every day in a special place at the same time.

  1. Set a timer for an amount of time that seems realistic. Maybe 15 minutes, or if you are like me start with 5 minutes. The goal is to eventually meditate for 30 minutes.
  2. Get comfortable and in a position that keeps your back straight. You can lay on the floor on your back with your knees bent, or sit in your favorite chair. You don’t have to sit cross legged or a cushion. Do what works for you!
  3. Close your eyes and relax your muscles. Listen to the sounds that surround you. Feel them.
  4. Inhale a few breaths and notice where you feel them the most. As you inhale in, say “in” and when you exhale, say “out.”
  5. When your mind wonders (mine does constantly), don’t judge yourself, or over-think that your mind is wandering…just keep going back to your inner timer of inhales “in” and exhales “out.” If I can do this, ANYONE can!

I had this recipe ready to go the day of my surgery. All Gary had to do was plop the food on the skewers and grill. The marinade is a salty sweet blend of pineapple juice and soy sauce that my sister in law, pretty Pam Schulist, gave me years ago. Always marinate your meat before grilling to decrease your cancer risk. Always! Even 10 minutes counts!

1/2 cup reduced sodium soy sauce, divided in half
1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1” chunks
1 20 oz can pineapple chunks, drained and save the juice (about 1 cup)
2 peppers, cut into 1” chunks (green, yellow, orange, red)
2 medium onions, cut into 1” chunks

Place chicken breasts in a container or plastic bag and the onions and peppers in another container or plastic bag. Pour one-half (1/2 cup) the pineapple juice reserved from the can into each. Pour 1/4 cup of soy sauce in each bag. Marinate a few hours.

Thread chicken, veggies and pineapple alternately on skewers. Discard the marinade. Spray the grill with vegetable spray. If you use wooden skewers, soak them in water for 30 minutes to prevent them from burning. Grill over medium heat about 10 minutes, turning often. (Turning often is a key to cancer risk reduction)

Optional: Brush on your favorite BBQ sauce on the chicken the last few minutes of grilling. Sprinkle your favorite seasoning on the pineapple. I used Penzey BBQ 3000. You can use fresh pineapple chunks and marinate in orange juice. These kebabs are perfect for your indoor grill too. Yield: 4 servings

Serve with a spinach salad, sliced fresh peaches and warm conversation.

I finally did “it” — had bone spurs removed (chielectomy with synovectomy) off my big right toe. I have needed this surgery for at least two years. Last January on our Hawaiian family vacation I realized I really couldn’t walk. In April I bought pretty “talk shoes” and found out it hurt too much to wear them and yet I still questioned if I needed surgery! It was a “no brainer” for Gary, but it wasn’t his toe or his life that would come to a standstill.

So on August 26th I finally had the surgery. Gary moved a bed into the family room while I moved in tons of stuff to read and “do” while recovering. I had to use crutches and didn’t realize you couldn’t carry a cup of coffee or even a piece of paper while using them. My highlight was crawling up the stairs on my butt and having a bath with my foot dangling out. The bath lifted my spirits and gave me something to do. The morning was spent brushing my teeth and washing my hair in the kitchen sink and finding breakfast. 11:00 am seemed to be the “longest” part of the day. It felt like 5 hours when I watched the clock go from 11:00 am to 11:43 am. I noticed after no longer taking the “drugs” that made me happy my spirits were sinking more and more and more. I was in a full fledged pity party. I was focusing on what I didn’t have — like the ability to walk, go outside or “do” my life. I have a need to accomplish — accomplishing anything is good…and my only accomplishment was finding new cable TV shows to watch. Oh MY!

Day 8 I made the decision. I choose to be happy. It is unrealistic to think life is a big bowl of cherries all the time. Every once in a while we have to deal with the “pits.” Everyone has their own way of coping with unpleasant or tough stuff. As you are reading this, it doesn’t matter if you are happy or sad, good or bad; you and I are marching towards the same direction — to tomorrow! And, you and I get to choose how to get there.

A certain amount of contentment depends on heredity and, of course, satisfying relationships also play a role. A happiness makeover is in your reach. I always think if you can train a puppy, you can surely train your brain.

Four Happy Habits That Worked For Me

  1. Grateful Goodies
Daily, write down three goodies you are grateful for.
Counting your daily joys makes you aware of your blessings. Trust me!
  2. Pick Your Belief and Dump the Worry
Think that your mood is in the “middle” and it can go either up or down.
Worry has much to do with your mood. You can worry if you want. All things people worry about are temporary. Everything passes. Knowing that is the secret to being happy. I dumped the worry of not being to “do” life; after all, this was only temporary.
  3. Meditate
Everything you are, everything you do, can be influenced positively from daily meditation. See the 5 Easy Steps to Meditating in this issue.
  4. Surround yourself with happy people
You know who they are. Happy people tend to have other happy people surround them — family, friends, and co-workers. Nurture the relationships you have and cultivate new ones. Thank you to Gary and Danielle who made countless trips up or down the stairs for something I needed and all the friends who sent cards, flowers, cooked me food, bought me food or special presents, or who called me to cheer me up. Yes! Relationships oxygenate life. I owe you!

I coach many people who appear very successful, but, in fact, they are miserably unhappy. The bottom line is no one can give you happiness — YOU have to create it. It’s not easy. But creating it makes life worth living. I am grateful I am healthy and have another day.
I can’t live my day twice so I better not waste it complaining. C’Mon. Be Happy!

Here to add value to your life, call me today! With much gratitude, Chere!

Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce Women’s Network — Overcome Overwhelm Luncheon

“I really enjoyed the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce Women’s Network luncheon. I laughed so much. You are a highly contagious person and we all need to be able to let loose and laugh at ourselves and with others. I understand you “stood in” for the originally scheduled speaker. That makes it even more awesome. I would recommend your presentation to everyone considering a speaker. You make us look at ourselves differently. I come from the “old school” of the Leave it to Beaver genre. I am the boss!! Thanks again!!!”
—Lois Walters, President, Gunnar Electric Inc

“Chere spoke at our Eden Prairie Chamber Women's Luncheon and it was amazing! The energy, the zest and the passion simply overtook the ladies (and the 2 men) attending our event! Chere spoke of daily situations and stresses that would normally make your head spin — and mine did! — but the humor that was interjected made me take a deep breath and realize that I'm not alone! Overcoming Overwhelm was a very positive, reassuring and inspirational topic and Chere presented it in an incredible manner with her charisma. Our group thoroughly enjoyed themselves!"
