Where is Chere Speaking?

Gary and I have been “gifting” time with each other. I took Gary on another surprise date.

The Gift of Listening
You must really, really listen. No interrupting, no daydreaming, no getting ready to answer. Tell a special person you want to add value to their life and want them to talk for 5 minutes and you will just listen. (Gary loves this one…he is the husband who says, “You gave a talk today and talked to clients today and still need to talk to me?”)

The Gift of Affection
Be generous with appropriate hugs, a pat on the back, or a high five.
If the person is not a great friend or family, ask, “May I give you a hug?” No one has ever said “no” to me. Do you love hugs?

The Gift of Solitude
Sometimes even “Chere who loves chaos” wants to be left alone. Be sensitive to people you care about and give them the gift of quiet and solitude. Wrap up a gift certificate, with the words, “One afternoon of solitude — day and time selected by you.”

The Gift of a Written Note
Handwritten notes are a thing of the past. Write a “thank you for being born” note to someone special that you are care about or love. Can’t think of what to write? Write a top ten list of why they are special to you or why you love them. This quick note that you will write may be remembered for a lifetime or may even change a life. Imagine that!

The Gift of Your Presence
Give the gift of your energy and time to someone who you care about but you are too busy to show it. Offer to go grocery shopping, babysit the kids, make an extra batch of your favorite cookies, invite them over on the spur of a moment for a glass of your favorite wine.

The gift list is endless!! This holiday season share the present of your presence. At the same time, you’ll have the most joyful holiday season of your life.

We spent hours looking for the perfect mattress. Gary likes “hard” sleep number “100” and I like “cozy” and “35.” The first perfect one we bought did not fit into the house.

Wade of Yetzers in Waconia, MN listened to both of us and came up with a plan! We were a lot of work!

HI CHERE!!!!! As I was putting your ezine into my "Chere Bork" file folder in my computer, I thought I should actually tell you that I value these newsletters so much that I don't delete them! :) They're filled with such great info/WISDOM, that I want to be able to access them again. I'm so proud of you Cherebanana! You've really found ways to reach the masses! (I'm trying to do the same). I've started a Pilates studio called Enliven downtown Hudson, and I'm also working on some projects that have great potential to make a bigger impact on the world. Very enlivening for me! I'll keep you posted.

Hi Chere! I just read your last newsletter on fear vs gratitude. It is so true. I have been doing a gratitude journal off and on for this past year. I started it with our family, my husband, now 5 yo daughter and myself. I had a sad year last year, I was 24 weeks pregnant with my 2nd daughter and she died for no reason without warning. I had a hard time getting beyond that. So here I find myself 36 weeks pregnant with my son. . . I have been reminding myself of the things I am grateful for, even though many times I find fear just filling my mind as I worry that God will take this child too. Especially as I get closer to the birth, I find myself fighting the fear with gratitude as it is overwhelming to remember some of the sad stories at the grief infant loss support group I went to last year, when some parents lost their babies at 40 weeks. I worry that he could die now, even still, even though the pregnancy has been a good one and normal, although high risk because of the past. Gratitude and declaration that he will be born are all I can cling to now for sanity purposes. Thank you so much for this last article. It just solidified what I guess I already know.

“Solitude is your present to your presence.”

Spicy Mexican Pork Roast with Winter Vegetables

There is nothing better than the feeling of a healthy meal cooking in the oven while you are enjoying family time. I threw this in the oven the evening we decorated the Christmas tree. The aroma, the nutrition and visual appeal of this dish sings “love.” Penzeys Spices came out with this new spice that will add some zing to anything you top it with.

Pork loin roast about 1.5 pounds – 2 pounds
1/3 cup and 1 tablespoon Penzeys Rojo Taco Seasoning (or you can use dry taco seasoning)
1/3 cup water
4 carrots, peeled and cut into eighths
2 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into eighths
4 onions, peeled and quartered

Cilantro leaves, chopped
Sour Cream

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F, Place the roast in baking pan or stoneware baker.

Coat the roast with 1/3 cup of the Penzey’s Spices Rojo Taco Seasoning. Pour the water in the bottom of the pan. Add carrots, sweet potatoes and onions around the perimeter of the pan. Drizzle vegetables with one tablespoon of the Rojo Seasoning. Bake for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F and roast and additional 20 minutes per pound. Stir the veggies halfway through the cooking time. This dish tastes even better as “planned overs!”

You may also use pork tenderloin and increase the temperature to 425 degrees F and bake 20 – 30 minutes per pound. Roasting guidelines are found at www.otherwhitemeat.com.

You could accompany this dish with fresh steamed green beans and a baked apple for dessert. Serve with cilantro leaves, light sour cream and warm conversation.

I love the glow of holiday lights. They just seem to warm my soul.

For a change this year (everything has changed in this “empty nest”) we placed the Christmas tree in the living room instead of the family room. The first few days I really missed the tree and even thought about telling Gary we needed to move it!

To enjoy the lights I found myself going into the living room and just sitting in the chair and basking in the glow of the lights. The first two times Gary came into the living room and said, “Are you ok Chere?” “Yes, I reply, just lovin’ the glow of the lights.” I found myself remembering breast feeding two brand new babies in the dark quiet of the night when everyone was sleeping except Brett or Danielle and myself. I remember many Christmases of the past.

I have discovered the gift of solitude. I quiet my “busyness” and get off automatic pilot and for a few moments dump my worries of yesterday, my fears of tomorrow and remove my urgent to do list. I choose to stop. When I choose STOP and become happily present I discover the best – my soul. My soul is that “special Chere part of me” that thrives on rich goosebump filled days. The goosebump days that I want everyday. You need stillness and solitude to listen to your heart. Only with this stillness and solitude can you stop to see the glow of your soul. And this glow of your soul is your present to your presence. Could you have a better holiday gift to yourself this year? I wish for each of you soul filled holiday season. Remember life is a gift, IF you choose to open it.
