Laura Lagano’s CBD-Infused Morning Coffee
This month I want to highlight registered dietitian nutritionist Laura Lagano, MS, RDN, CDN, who has always been ahead of the curve. As part of her integrative nutrition practice, she educates both consumers and professionals about integrating cannabis with nutrition and other holistic approaches.
Though more than two-thirds of the states in the country have approved medical marijuana and the number of states that permit adult (recreational) cannabis is growing, fear of cannabis lingers. Laura calls this cannaphobia, which she wrote about on HuffPost. Here’s a quick education about the cannabis plant from Laura.
A Brief Cannabis Education
- Both marijuana and hemp are cannabis. Yes, hemp is cannabis!
- By definition, marijuana contains over 0.3% THC (and often a much higher percentage).
- Hemp contains less than 0.3% THC. Yes, hemp-derived CBD can sometimes contain a very low percentage of THC.
- THC and CBD are among the 100+ phytocannabinoids in the cannabis plant.
- Both THC and CBD are psychoactive, though CBD does not “make you high.”
- Cannabis is a bioaccumulator, so it’s crucial to know your hemp farmer when selecting CBD.
Why Laura loves this recipe
Edibles—foods and beverages infused with cannabinoids—are available everywhere. Yet, most follow the formula of the ubiquitous pot brownie—laden with sugar and other inflammatory ingredients. For those who are bit skeptical about cannabis (even hemp-derived CBD), a home-made coffee beverage is a good introduction for two reasons. First, coffee (at least in the US) tends to be an adult beverage, so the message is “not for those under 21.” Second, coffee and hemp-derived CBD are natural partners because both have psychoactive affects that balance one another. Laura can teach you more—much more—about cannabis.
Who is Laura?
Laura Lagano, MS, RDN, CDN, is an Integrative Clinical Nutritionist and was Co-Founder of the Holistic Cannabis Academy, the first comprehensive education platform for practitioners about integrating the ancient plant into healthcare. Laura’s journey to cannabis was led by her dissatisfaction with what conventional healthcare had to offer her daughter, Isabella, who has a developmental disability. Isabella is now ready for the work force and on her way to independent living thanks to integrative healing approaches, including nutrition and hemp-derived CBD oil. When not educating and consulting about cannabis and holistic healing, Laura can be found cooking for her family, socializing in her community, and basking in her role as mother of three young adults and wife to a soccer-obsessed husband in Hoboken, NJ.
How do you savor and enjoy your life?
Relationships are foundational to me. Nothing is more important. In my private practice, I teach my clients about lowering toxic load. That includes moving away from toxic relationships and surrounding yourself with people and experiences that bring you happiness and joy.
Family is everything to Laura! Family first!
