Healthy Pepperoni-Less Pizza

Everyone in my house loves pizza. Try this version that pleases everyone — kids because it still tastes like pepperoni pizza, mom because it is much lower in fat using ground turkey, dad because it is heartier than most pizzas with a higher protein content and it is a quick dinner fix. I buy several pounds of skinless ground turkey and cook them, rinse them and freeze in one pound packages.

  • 1 pound ground turkey, cooked, rinsed for 3 minutes in hot water and drained (rinsing drastically decreases your fat content)
  • 1 26-ounce jar spaghetti sauce
  • 3 – 4 tablespoons pizza seasoning (I love www.penzeys.com)
  • 1 pizza crust (I love Betty Crocker Pizza Crust Mix, Simply Add Water – reminds me of mom)
  • Handful of pepperoni slices, about 10 slices (for flavor)
  • Mushrooms, onions, green peppers – any healthy veggies you love on your pizza
  • Mozzarella Cheese, shredded

Combine ground turkey, spaghetti sauce and pizza seasoning. Cook over medium heat to blend flavors about 15 minutes. Use one-half recipe for this pizza and freeze or use the other half for your next pizza.

Prepare pizza crust according to package directions.

Layer ground turkey/sauce mixture on your favorite crust. Scatter a few pepperoni on top of turkey sauce for flavor. Top with your favorite vegetable toppings. Sprinkle shredded cheese over pizza. Bake according to package directions.

Serve with a tossed salad with low fat dressing.

  1. Cheri: How about Hormel’s turkey pepperoni … is that as healthy as it states ? I know it’s much less fat than regular …

  2. Cheri: How about Hormel’s turkey pepperoni? We love that … it is much less fat than regular .. but is it really better? What is your RD take on that? Thank you!

I love Hormel turkey pepperoni. It is lower in fat yes and perhaps higher in sodium. However your sodium intake is low
      that is A ok.
Also try lean ham from the deli..it is really good with moz cheese and olives on a pizza.
or try Turkey Store Italian Hot Italian sausage.
Have you brought that? They have mild and italian. Gary cooked up a Turkey Store Hot Italian Sausage tonight.

  3. Thanks for this recipe, Chere! My husband and I we have “pizza and salad night” every Friday and often consists of the best frozen pizza at the best price when I go shopping. I’m looking forward to trying out this homemade version, though. I was also going to mention Hormel Turkey Pepperoni…that is what my husband and I use when we supplement a cheese pizza or make our own. It has half the calories (70 vs 140 for regular) and has a third of the fat (4g vs 13g for regular)! It does, however, have a bit more sodium. We can’t tell the difference between the turkey and regular pepperoni! May want to give it a try!

    1. Stephanie great ideas..and what I love best is that you a ritual for Friday night.
Structure = effortlessness. and yay to an easy Friday night ritual.
The pizza crust I like best is Trader Joe’s for 99 cents. When the kids lived here I used to make my own
from scratch and bake on the grill.
