Five Weighs to Lose Weight Series; No “Diet” Required
Lose the weight this spring…without the diet! This week I’ll share with you a tip a day to help you get on track.
Tip #1: Sleep More
Want an easy way to lose weight during the day? Sleep at night. The Nurses Health Study has shown that lack of sleep may increase your risk for weight gain even if you are not overeating. The study found that participants who slept five hours a night were 32 percent more likely to experience a weight gain of 33 pounds or greater compared with sleeping seven hours. The group that slept for six hours were 12 percent more likely to experience major weight gain compared with those who slept seven hours a night.
A University of Chicago study found that participants who slept only four hours a night for two nights had an 18 percent decrease in the hormone leptin (suppresses your appetite) and a 28 percent increase in the hormone ghrelin ( stimulates your appetite).
With sleep deprivation your leptin falls and ghrelin increases, which increases your cravings for sweets, salty foods and starchy foods like bread and pasta.
Action: Sleep 7 hours to avoid increased appetite and craving for sweets, salty foods and carbs. Is it the easiest way to not gain weight or what?!
