Foods Dietitians WON’T Eat and Foods They Can’t Live Without

To celebrate Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day I asked my dietitian nutritionist colleagues what foods they will not eat. Some may surprise you!

?????

I will not eat bacon – although my husband and kids love it.  I buy Canadian bacon instead as it’s the pork loin versus the fatty pork belly.  It’s leaner, lower in calories, sodium and fat.  It’s tasty on a whole grain English Muffin with a scrambled egg on top – it’s a homemade Egg McMuffin.

I won’t eat raw shellfish – oysters, clams – but love them cooked, especially in a stew!

I’m not a picky eater at all, and of all things to dislike, it’s a power-packed sweet potato that I just can’t enjoy. I know, it’s shameful: a fitness and nutrition guru who declines one of most dense super-foods. I do get them in though, either by tossing thin slices of sweet potato wedges in the oven when roasting red potato chunks, or by making sweet potato pancakes.

I won’t eat bananas because I don’t like the way they smell or taste. I eat pretty much every other fruit.

I don’t eat cold cereal with milk, I just don’t like it. Instead I eat hot cooked oat bran.

I won’t eat okra and kiwi because they’re slimy. Lamb – don’t like the smell or taste Shellfish – anaphilactic shock and peanut butter, and chocolate – they’re both yuck to me. Instead I eat all other fruits and put kiwi in smoothies with other fruits and ingredients so I don’t taste it. Okra I don’t worry about I eat all other vegetables. I eat all other meats especially fish and pork and also eat goat where it’s available and cooked. And, I eat almonds, walnuts, and anything vanilla

I won’t eat animal flesh, as I’m plant-based—my personal choice for human health, animal welfare, and health of the planet. Solution:  I eat lots of plant proteins, such as beans, lentils, tofu, nuts, and seeds. I love heirloom beans, such as Indian Women Yellow Beans and Calypso Beans. I can’t live without lentils—on my menu each week. Any brand will do. I love extra firm tofu, many great brands.

For foods I will not eat, I LOVE popcorn- just love it! But I will not eat any microwave “butter” popcorn due to the chemicals and the trans fats. Now, there are some brands that don’t contain trans fats and contain less chemicals that I will enjoy, but what I find the easiest is to simply take popcorn kernels, throw them in a brown paper lunch bag, fold over the top, lay on it’s side and microwave- you have perfectly popped air popped popcorn in 2 minutes! I love it!

I will not eat or drink anything ‘hot’ out of a Styrofoam container or cup.  Why?  Because they contain styrene – a chemical compound that is increasingly suspect. In the 12th edition of its Report on Carcinogens, the National Toxicology Program (NTP) stated that styrene is “reasonably anticipated to be a carcinogen,” and the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified styrene as a “possible human carcinogen.” However, in spite of these classifications, polystyrene foam continues to be widely used for coffee cups, egg cartons, and salad boxes as well as disposable bowls, plates and trays.

Instead, I bring my own glass or metal travel mug into coffee shops and fast food restaurants.  I also immediately take my food out of the Styrofoam containers when I get home….or I ask for a plastic container or paper bag to put my leftovers into.

I won’t eat regular peanut butter (with added sugar, salt and emulsifiers). My solution is to eat natural peanut butters made only from peanuts (I love the Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s brands) or to make my own nut butter in my Ninja blender.

I won’t eat sauerkraut because it is the only food on this planet that I truly do not enjoy eating!  I don’t think that sauerkraut warrants a substitute

  1. Beets. I know how good they are for us and yet, I just can’t. Every few years, I’ll try them again but nope, can’t stand them!

    1. Dazzlin Danielle, have you had them almost burnt with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar and honey? Come visit and I will cook them for you.
      What about those beautiful Brussels?
