  1. Expand your energy – get to bed so you can fully enjoy the next day
  2. Expand your wants - prioritize what you want to do not obligations and “should do”
  3. Expand your relationships – nurture the family and friends who have been quietly waiting for you to be "unbusy,” and don’t take them for granted anymore
  4. Expand your health – you can consciously decide to be healthy this holiday or unconsciously decide to be unhealthy this holiday season
  5. Expand your intentions for the season -Whether you are celebrating Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Christmas, take a few deep breaths and two minutes and remember the reason for the season

This summer I met April when she was working at the Cannon River Winery in Cannon Falls, MN. She is working on her Master’s Degree and becoming a RD just like me. I love meeting new RDs to be as they are our future. She wants to work with eating disorders and desires an internship at the Emily Program. I believe we were meant to meet!

STUFF DOESN'T MAKE YOU HAPPY

Brett, our son, bought a new queen sized bed and needed all new bedding. He bought a fabulous down comforter, a dark gray duvet, and new grey sheets from Macy’s.  I got caught up in the Black Friday shopping and found myself the owner of a new down comforter too. This led to a duvet and new sheets. Did I need them? Not really. I stay sorta warm if I pile on pounds of blankets on my side of our bed and wear knee-high ice skating to bed. On the really cold nights I microwave my handy dandy rice sock (a hockey sock filled with rice; microwave on high for two minutes) and put it in the bottom of my bed a few minutes before I go to sleep.

Every visit I take a special recipe to cook with the kids. Breaded, baked zucchini didn’t turn out to be their favorite but Hannah and I sure had fun.

As I write this, Gary and I are waiting for our first snowstorm (already have seven inches and super excited to snowshoe tonight)  to stop long enough so we can drive to the Mall of America to buy a Forever 21 giftcard for our niece and a college hoodie sweatshirt for our nephew. My niece and nephew are normal teens who want stuff.  Besides the stuff, what they really enjoy are my bedtime stories. When I go to Milwaukee I sleep in Tyler’s bottom bunk bed and all the kids lay on the floor and I tell stories until they fall asleep. I started this tradition many years ago. As I drive to Milwaukee I  usually begin to think of my latest trips and adventures and the stories I will tell. I struggle to stay awake and I think they are all asleep and until I hear, “Tell another story Auntie Chere!” I would bet a year from now they will remember laying in the dark listening to Auntie Chere more than what they bought using their gift cards.

Where is Chere savoring life?

Savoring is a quality that happy people naturally have in abundance.

Savoring = to mindfully engage in thoughts or behaviors that heighten the effect of positive events on positive feelings. There are 3 temporal forms of Savoring: (1) Anticipatory (2) In the Moment and (3) Reminiscent. We can savor a positive event before it happens by getting excited in preparation for it, we can savor the positive event as it event as it occurs and we can savor a positive event by remembering it. What are you savoring today?

Celebrated 12-12-12 with Sue Brown my BFF. We have not seen each other for 2 years 7 month. A great way to celebrate Aaron Rodgers Day!

How lucky are we to celebrate the kid’s birthdays with Grandma Ady. She cooks us special meals (and sweets) and makes us feel so extra special. I want to be like her…it seems like she has more energy than me.

Happy Birthday Danielle and Brett. As a RD mom, what I find so interesting is that neither kid likes cake and they don’t even want a birthday cake anymore. Really!! I think the cupcakes from Woullet’s Bakery were a hit.

We see Uncle Mark only a few times a year. He surprised us be being at Grandma Ady’s and helped celebrate the birthdays! Ask him about the big deer rack he found in the woods!!
