5 WAYS SCIENCE SAYS WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY

  1. Making the Best of It
    When life gives you lemons ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?’ instead of “Why me? Why questions are “fishing questions” and what questions result in positive actions. People that maintain a positive attitude when adversity strikes are happier.
  2. Savor Everyday Moments
    Pause and use your senses to smell your coffee or listen to the wind or people watch. Psychologist Sonja Lyumborisky studies show that people who took the time to “savor” ordinary events they usually hurried through showed significant increases in happiness and less depression.
  3. Treasure Family and Make Friends
    Happier people tend to have good families, friends, and supportive relationships, say Diener and Biswas-Diener. Don’t make shallow acquaintance but “closer relationships” with people who care and understand you.
  4. Dump “Comparitis” and Comparisons
    Sonja Lyumborisky’s studies showed that comparing yourself to others can damage your happiness and self-esteem. Focus on your own accomplishments.
  5. Get Out and Exercise
    The magic pill for everything is exercise. Many studies have shown that moving your body can be as effective as treating depression without any side effects. Get out there and release some “I love my life” endorphins.

Contagious HAPPINESS

I never forgot how I felt the first time I heard, “Chere you are waaay too happy.” Have you ever heard a comment by someone that took your breath away (and not in a good way). Relationships can oxygenate our lives and make us thrive or stifle us and take our breath away.

Back in 2007, even health care professionals were shocked when the New England Journal of Medicine* published the results of the research that studied 12,000 people over 32 years and showed that your chances of becoming obese were not necessarily tied to your sleep habits, your exercise or even what you eat (these do play a giant, giant role), but rather the key predictor were who your closest friends were.

The study showed we are 171% more likely to gain weight if our closest friends gain weight even if they lived miles away. Dr. Nicholas Christakis, the principal investigator in the study stated, “You change your idea of what is an acceptable body type by looking at the people around you.”

TASTE LIFE BALANCE RECIPE OF THE MONTH CHIA SEED SPINACH EGGS

If you are tired of the same old same old breakfast…time to add chia seeds to your eggs like my college friend Cate Gasser does for her family. They contain omega 3 fatty acids, fiber, and protein. The egg chia seed mixture is similar to the consistency of couscous.

Ingredients per person

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon of chia seeds
  • Few tablespoons onion, chopped
  • Baby spinach about one handful
  • Milk about one tablespoon
  • Butter

Whisk the chia seeds into egg
and soak for 15 minutes

Add milk to chia seed egg mixture.

 

Add spinach and stir until leaves are slightly wilted

Method: Whisk the chia seeds into the egg and soak for 15 minutes. Sauté the onion in a non- stick fry pan in butter until soft. Whisk the milk into the chia seed egg mixture. Add the egg milk chia seed mixture to the pan and stir until set. Add the baby spinach leaves and stir the mixture until leaves are slightly wilted. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Where is Chere savoring life?

Savoring is a quality that happy people naturally have in abundance.

Savoring = to mindfully engage in thoughts or behaviors that heighten the effect of positive events on positive feelings. There are 3 temporal forms of Savoring: (1) Anticipatory (2) In the Moment and (3) Reminiscent. We can savor a positive event before it happens by getting excited in preparation for it, we can savor the positive event as it event as it occurs and we can savor a positive event by remembering it. What are you savoring today?

Reminiscent Savoring: Many hours were spent on the driveway playing basketball, made more challenging by our steep driveway. I spent more time chasing balls down the street than making hoops. Brett and Gary took down the hoop as Brett moves to Chicago June 30, 2012 to be a CPA at Deloitte. Being a mom is often bittersweet!
