5 TIPS TO FEEL IN CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE

  1. I can’t always control what happens to me but I can control how I react.
  2. My thoughts create my day.
  3. I am in charge of my thoughts.
  4. My thoughts can be like a snowless Minnesota January or a Hawaiian sunshine day.
  5. Trying to control others or be in charge of them is like trying to control the weather. I am smarter than that.

TASTE LIFE — EXAMPLES FROM REAL PEOPLE

A COACHING CLIENT WRITES

"In just three sessions, Chere and I had, I already sense a difference in how I deal with stress from day to day. Somehow during my coaching with Chere I became aware how my thoughts affected my mood, more than the actual events. Chere helped me identify my personal needs and see how everything I do, think and feel relates back to those needs. I am trying to be more joyful and now I catch myself when negative thoughts cross my mind and replace them with more positive ones. I spend more time analyzing WHY certain things make me feel either energized or drained and then make a conscious effort to think differently about things I initially viewed as an obstacle rather than an opportunity. Your thoughts do affect your mood. I hired Chere to feel less overwhelmed by my work and all my responsibilities as well as strategies to reprioritize my life so I could have more me time. Chere you are energizing and so down to earth with easy ideas to change my life. I can’t believe it."

Chere’s note: I met A when I presented my keynote Creating Positive Energy for Change. If you would look at A’s life you would be jealous…she is thin, pretty, has a good job and seems to have it all. Not! Her “doing life” like her job, and health were fantastic but what really counted was her “being life”…her thoughts. Just three hours of coaching gave her years of happiness. Coaching is one on one, on the telephone, confidential and life changing!

Quit waiting to be happy and healthy and call me today 952 937 5697 to set up your 30 min energy coaching session before the busy holidays. Maybe the BEST gift you can give yourself.

I FORGOT I AM NOT IN CHARGE

60 degrees in January in Minnesota! There has never been a 60 degree temperature recorded during the first week of January in Minnesota’s climate record. EVER!! Many people love it. Winter people like Gary hate it. His new snowshoes are waiting for him. A winter of fun XC skiing seems less and less likely. I feel very badly for people who depend on our snow economy. We forgot we are not in charge.

This fall I had cataract surgery and lenses implants. I developed an infection in my right eye that does not seem related to the lenses implants rather an infected plug placed years ago in my tear duct. Today, I type with cloudy vision which drives me crazy. Last week’s tear duct surgery has seemed to make my vision cloudier. The topper is Health Partners paid $7441.00 for the first eye and doesn’t want to pay for the second. I have to appeal. I forgot I am not in charge.

I have coached a wonderful scientist who has worked at a major Minneapolis corporation for 9 years and has had 15 bosses. The latest boss makes poor decisions, is not organized, is not technical enough and is always taking time off and does not know the word acknowledge. No matter what this scientist does she cannot make her boss happy. We have coached about the difference between controlling people and influencing people. Through coaching she is reminded she is not in charge of anyone other than herself. And perhaps the only people she used to influence were her children in grade school.

All of these situations, the weather, a body part that does not work or a boss you can never please can get you down. Every single day your life brings you wonderful surprises and amazing challenges. Each of these stories begs the question, What am I in charge of?

Read more about how to flip the switch to positivity and remember what you are in charge of. Share your story, too - our favorite will receive a box of tea from Hawaii.

TASTE LIFE BALANCE RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Busy People Can Have Time to Cook Salmon Patties Without Guilt

Salmon Patties
From the 5 Ingredients for Healthy Living Cookbook by
The Nutrition Sisters
Chere Bork, RD and Laurie Meyer, RD

Growing up Catholic in Milwaukee meant meatless Friday night suppers. Our mom often made salmon loaf or a tuna pea potato chip casserole which all of us kids loved. Laurie came up with this really fantastic 5 ingredient salmon recipe. Your heart would love you if you cooked up these omega threes every week.

  • 2 cups cooked salmon or 15 oz. can skin and bones removed
  • 1/2 cup Italian seasoned breadcrumbs or cracker crumbs
  • 1 egg or 2 egg whites, lightly beaten
  • 1/4 cup minced onion
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil, divided
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 1/8 tsp. black pepper

Combine salmon, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, 1 tablespoon oil, salt and pepper in a large bowl and stir to blend. Shape into 4 patties and refrigerate 30 minutes. Heat skillet with the remaining oil over medium heat. Add salmon and cook 5 minutes per side. Serve on whole grain roll or salad greens with your favorite toppings. Makes four servings.

Nutrition: 278 Calories; 25 gm Protein; 15 gm. Fat; 10.7 gm. Carbohydrate; 311 mg Sodium

If you are squeamish about picking out bones out of the salmon buy some plastic gloves at Walgreens. One box has 100 gloves and is only $4.00. I use the gloves most often when I dice up jalapenos. And now that Brett is living with us again I sure use more them in cooking!

Read more about whether you need a fish oil supplement and how to save money when you buy it.

What a surprise! Susan Zimmerman surprised me with cooking the Salmon Patties. She even bought a new patty maker. They were gorgeous. We ate with all our senses

Grandma Lily said “People will always have to eat!” So what else could Laurie and I be besides Registered Dietitians? We are in our second printing of our 5 Ingredients for Healthy Living Cookbook. The cookbook includes 5 ingredient real food recipes and lists of five to live the 5 ingredients of purpose, energy, happiness, healthy and balance. If you have decided you are done with eating your meals as an afterthought and instead want to think of meals as a ritual that you can savor that nourishes your belly and your spirit, order your cookbook now. I love my birthday month. To celebrate want to offer you my birthday price for orders of five. Create your team of health with four friends.

Where is Chere savoring life?

Savoring is a quality that happy people naturally have in abundance.

Savoring = to mindfully engage in thoughts or behaviors that heighten the effect of positive events on positive feelings. There are 3 temporal forms of Savoring: (1) Anticipatory (2) In the Moment and (3) Reminiscent. We can savor a positive event before it happens by getting excited in preparation for it, we can savor the positive event as it event as it occurs and we can savor a positive event by remembering it. What are you savoring today?

This month one picture is worth a thousand words.

Took this Christmas photo of my mom and dad and their grandkids. I honestly think it is the best picture I ever took. The best - my wonderful amazing mom was happily smiling away and did not realize the antics going on around her. And, my dad’s expression is priceless.

Would love to see your best photo. Email it to me and win a $10.00 Starbucks card if your photo is chosen as best.
