5 REASONS WHY YOU NEED SLEEP
The Fall is such a busy time of year with new schedules and it only will get busier with the holidays. Sleep affects your health more than you know! Take at look at why you need to get your zzzzs.
Ghrelin, a hormone secreted by the stomach makes you feel hungry.
Leptin, another hormone, does the opposite. Sleep loss leads to more ghrelin and less leptin, which makes you crave more food.
Another study, the Nurses Health Study (of nearly 70,000 women), found women sleeping 5 or fewer hours per night were 32% more likely to experience major weight gain (33 lb+) and 15% more likely to become obese during the 16-year study period than the women who slept at least 7 hours per night.
When you miss sleep, the secretion of insulin is diminished which results in your blood sugar being higher.
Not enough sleep slows down your metabolic rate, making it really easy for you to gain weight.
Adequate sleep builds a stronger immune system. Worried about the H1N1? Get some zzzzs.

TASTE LIFE BALANCE RECIPE OF THE MONTH
15 Minute, 5 Ingredient Chili
Gary and I arrived home from our Smokey Mountain Trip starving. I threw this chili together with ingredients I always keep on hand. The secret to get it ready fast is buying 2 or 3 pounds of ground turkey and having it ready to go. Brown the turkey meat; rinse for 3 minutes in hot water to remove 30% of the fat and freeze in 1 quart freezer bags. I usually keep a few extra pounds of already cooked ground turkey ready to go for those times when you are out of time.
1 pound ground turkey, cooked, drained
1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
1 tsp cumin
2 tsp chili powder
In sauté pan combine all the ingredients. Simmer for 10 minutes to marry the flavors. You can add more chili powder or less cumin. Spice it up the way you family loves. (No spicing up would have had Danielle love this dish.) You can garnish with light sour cream, cheese, onions or cilantro. This healthy, high fiber recipe serves 4.
ARE YOU WAITING TO LIVE?
We finally got back to the Great Smoky Mountains for a week of relaxation and hiking. Picking out a hike was overwhelming as there were 150 hikes to pick from and we were only in the mountains for 6 days. Every night we studied the maps and picked out a hike for the next day. My favorite hikes are to waterfalls or a special destination. One hike was to Alum Cave where the first Epsom Salts were made. It seemed the start of our hikes were always adventurous and exciting. (Will we see a bear? We saw 4 bears but thankfully not on our hiking trail.) And, when we reached the waterfall it was a triumphant ending. Yes, we did it! I love getting close enough to the waterfall so I can feel the mist on my face as I take pictures to capture the memory for later. (This drives Gary nuts.) But most of the hike was in the middle. Right foot. Left foot. Right foot. As I was hiking I kept on thinking how life is in the middle. Life is a journey not a destination. We experience a few exciting beginnings like marriage, the birth of our kids. But, for the most part, life is in the middle. On our life journey we meet people that will cheer us up or bring us down.
The sad part is that most people I know are missing out on the journey of life. They are not enjoying the present. They are waiting. Waiting to lose 10 pounds, gain 10 pounds, go back to school, have the kids leave the house, clean the house, organize the garage, waiting to retire..waiting..waiting..waiting.
What are you waiting for? Things will never be perfect. As long as you wait, nothing happens. It is so easy to enjoy life in the middle with these three steps.
- Decide what you want.
Ask yourself: What do you really, really want?
- Choose it.
- Take actions to get it.
When I ask people what would make them happy, the number one answer is winning the lottery. Seriously! Dont wait to win the lottery. Stop waiting and start living. There are always going to be amazing beginnings and triumphant endings. But, remember, most of life is in the middle!
