5 TIPS TO LIVE HAPPY DOING ONE LITTLE THING

(a happy life is just a bunch of “one things”)

  1. Dump multitasking. Discover extra ordinary energy doing one thing at a time…
  2. Plan on doing one task each day while you are earning your living (this means one project that really counts at work each day)
  3. Plan on doing one special thing each day that you look forward to (call your mom or sister, eat lunch with a friend, watch your favorite TV show (a TV show)
  4. Show one person you love them each day.
  5. Do one thing to feel alive the next day…get to bed!

TASTING LIFE REAL PEOPLE EXAMPLES

TARA A TASTE LIFE COACHING CLIENT WRITES:

Tara created a year of intention with one or two big intentions in each area of life. For fun and recreation she decided she wanted to join a knitting group and start piano lessons. She further broke her big year goals down into quarters. She wanted to accomplish the knitting goal by April 1st.

On week after we created the year goals I was delightfully surprised to receive this email. Tara wrote, “I got out my learn to knit book, needles and yarn and knitted a scarf. I took one look at the directions and remembered how to do it. I think what helped was having it be my goal and I thought WHY not NOW!! Hurray!!!” Tara

LEE, A TASTE LIFE SUBSCRIBER WRITES:

“You are one of three special people who light up my smile when you send me an e-mail. It makes my whole in-tray better by having a note from you appear. I resist reading them right away and wait for a break in my schedule when I can truly read and experience your note.

I continue to work with my personnel trainer on my physical well being and also on the mental/life balance issues that present a challenge to being. I cherish these notes that help lighten and brighten my day.”
Peace and Blessings,
—Lee

LISA, CHERE’S COACHING CLIENT HAS A FANTASTIC EXERCISE IDEA:

You constantly hear you need to exercise. Few people (except Gary and his triathlon friends) I meet want to exercise. Rather, most people feel guilted or “shoulded” into moving their bodies. If you want a unique method to motivate your beautiful body to move and are task and data driven, Lisa has come up with a very easy way to fit in exercise. Read how she moved her body 291 days of last year.

“I have always been fairly active. After graduating from college I realized that I was going to have to be intentional about exercising on a regular basis. I would exercise and the next day would come and I’d bargain with myself, “You exercised yesterday. You can take a break today.” Well, days would pass and soon it was over a week. I realized I couldn’t exercise everyday but would need to exercise on a regular basis. My schedule changed a lot from week to week (and I like variety), so I couldn’t say, “I’ll exercise every Monday, Wednesday and Friday”. That’s when I came up with a percentage of days. I think I have been doing this since 1993. I just recently got rid of the calendars I had saved and wrote the actual percentages in my planner, because who needs the clutter!

Each year I decide on a percentage of days that I plan to exercise. I am task oriented and like to cross things off, so I have a fun calendar in my office at work. When I exercise, I write down what I do on that day and it’s “done”. To qualify, I need to do an intentional workout for a minimum of 30 minutes. This can be any type of exercise, walking, yoga, other cardio, strength training, etc. I don’t limit it to cardio only but I do not count activities of daily living (mowing or doing housework which can be exercise!). Here are my actual numbers.

2001- I ended up at 64% of the days of the year.
2006 – Actual was 58% - Only 211 days - very low for me. I went to Italy, got engaged, planned a wedding and was married (and moved across town) in 2006 and exercise went out of the window on the weekends!
2007 – 65% goal. Actual was 69% - back on track
2008 – 79.5%– 291 days – my highest ever. I only missed 1 day in January 2008 and this was very motivating to me.
2009 - My goal for is 70%.
This system really helps me stay active during vacations and on holidays. It is working for me.” — Lisa

Call to Action: Get out your calendar. Starting with March determine how many days realistically you can move your body each month for the rest of the year. Just do it!

QUIT WAITING AND START LIVING

Are you waiting to be happy? Yesterday I was coaching D who is feeling overwhelmed with her 125 urgent work emails, work projects, messy house, her desire to install cabinets in her garage…her list went on and on. I asked her what happens after she gets this all done. She replied, “Then I will be happy.” Do you have a “I will be happy when…?” I meet many people who are desperately trying to “get done with their “to do list” so they can finally be ready to “live happy.”

But what happens if a “suddenly” pops into your life? A sudden serious illness. A sudden breast lump. A sudden heart attack. (Aren’t they all sudden heart attacks!) We kinda count on being free on “suddenlys.” We actually plan on having no suddenlys. (The irony of that.) After all, “suddenlys” happen to other people, not us.

As I was pondering this, Mike Park, a TASTE LIFE subscriber wrote.

“I don't know if you remember me. I'm the guy who lives in Pinetop AZ, and retired from Medtronic in October 2005 – actually 75% retired. I wanted to comment on your caption: You only have one life to live — imagine if it was one you loved.

A 53-year old friend of ours a little over a month ago discovered that he had stage 4 melanoma, and it has advanced to a point that he has only weeks to live. He is a very driven individual - he and his wife have been on only 3 one-week vacations over the last 30 years, and he wanted to plan a big bash in the Bahamas this summer with all of his friends that could make it. His condition quickly became much worse, and now he may not make it beyond the next few weeks. He is now planning a dinner this Friday evening for his friends. How quickly our fortunes may change! My reminder to live life while you can.”

So I asked Mike, What are you doing to savor each day and go to bed with no regrets?

Mike replied, “What got me thinking about this was the following quote, "Life begins when a person first realizes how soon it will end." (Marcelene Cox, an American writer)"

Mike cut this quote out of the newspaper and gave it a good deal of thought. He asked himself, “What if I could capture this attitude, this feeling of life really beginning, before I am faced with an actual finality brought on by age, disease, etc?” He said, weeks later, "My friend was putting together his "bucket list", probably too late, going through all the stages of grief, faced with his mortality that will too soon be a reality. And this drove home the need to start living my life in a very real and personal way.

So my own thoughts and actions have been as follows:

  • Live in the moment, be present in the moment.
  • Tell all the loved ones in my life that I love them, every day. Give and receive hugs every chance I get.
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables, and less red meat.
  • Exercise frequently - I have been playing handball 2-3 times a week, and I thoroughly enjoy it!
  • Take George Eliot's quote to heart "It is never too late to be who you might have been.As a result, I am playing the trombone again, practicing seriously, went to the International Trombone Festival last summer in Salt Lake City - and I play in a regional symphony and a big band.
  • Try to not sweat anything, including the fact that my 401K has turned into a 201K.
  • Enjoy the small things in life - the animals in my backyard - I have a squirrel that climbs up my trousers to get a peanut out of my hand.
  • Achieve a state of joy while shoveling snow - appreciating the fact that I am still healthy enough to do it, that I don't have do something like go to Vegas to get this feeling of joy - in fact, better if I don't.
  • Every now and then do something really special - like the New Zealand/Australia cruise we did last spring
  • Spend time each day reflecting in a spirit of gratitude for all that is, for all the people I have in my life, for the country I live in, the freedoms I have, for the things I am able to do”

—Mike

Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch in his famous last lecture vowed to spend every precious moment with his family when he was told he had 6 months to live. He said, “I’m living like I’m dying.” But at the same time I’m very much living like I am still living. Mike is living! Mike has vividly captured tangible every day actions to live today like he is dying tomorrow. He is not waiting for “a suddenly.” If you knew when your “suddenly” was going to be, what would you do differently? We all have a “suddenly” waiting for us. Each of has numbered days, lucky or not we just don’t know OUR number. Pick up the phone and call your mother, sister, dad or brother. They have been waiting for you to live happy today! And don’t forget, live like today is your last day, some day it will be. What are you waiting for?

With gratitude and love, Chere
Here to add value to your living on purpose, let me know how!

Where is Cherecoach in the media and speaking?

Lite Up Your Life With Balance Presentation at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Chippewa Falls, WI

“Chere spoke at our annual “Live and Laugh” women’s event … we’ve had a lot of speakers over the years, but Chere tops the list. Guests raved about her energy and humor, which they have come to expect over the years at our event. However, I’m most proud of the numerous comments we received such as “I was given concrete ideas to better my life, with practical information” and “Chere made me truly feel capable of making changes”. When the goal of our event is to uplift the spirit of women and motivate them to be the best they can be … reading the post-event evaluations, I can honestly say our event was a smashing success.

Chere’s expertise in public speaking extended to the point of modifying her presentation at the last moment . . . after she spent time mingling with guests prior to her start …. to better fit the needs of the crowd. This is an amazing tactic that only seasoned professionals can pull off successfully.

I was impressed by Chere’s commitment to our speaking engagement to make it the best it could be. We worked collaboratively on the content of the program, modifying her presentation to create a unique and individualized package of materials specific for the women at our event” —Michele (Shelly) Paquette, Marketing Specialist, St. Joseph’s Hospital
