5 TIME-RICH LIVING IDEAS

  1. When you wake up in the morning, ask yourself, “Who do I want to be today?”
    Then, do one little baby step to “be” who you want! Life is baby steps! ALL baby steps.
  2. Let go of perfection. I sometimes wonder if it is a form of procrastination.
  3. Create a list of your top five values and order them in importance. Values, personal needs and tolerations are the first items identified in coaching and create the foundation for who you want to “be.”
  4. Identify the top five people who you want in your time rich life. How many of them do you see each day or each week?
  5. Make a list of your passions and talents and ask yourself, “How often do I use them? When you use them, time flies!

TASTE LIFE BALANCE RECIPE OF THE MONTH

20 Minute Peppery Italian Sausage Sauté

The other day, I was coaching a stressed out and time starved client. One of her obstacles to a happier life is working late and coming home starving to a house with no food. I really believe the way to organize your life is to organize your kitchen! That evening, I was making this sausage sauté for dinner. It is healthy and quick and filling and provides “planned overs.” This recipe makes one meal for four or two meals for two.

1 package (19.5 ounces) Sweet Italian Turkey Sausage (I use Jennie-O Turkey Store)
2 Red Peppers, sliced
2 Yellow Peppers, sliced
1 Red onion, peeled and sliced thinly
Optional: Your favorite seasoning. I like Tuscan Sunset, which is a salt free Italian Style seasoning (www.penzeys.com)

Spray a skillet with non-stick vegetable spray. Heat over medium heat. Cook sausages covered for 10 minutes. Turn the sausages. Add sliced peppers and onion and your favorite seasoning. Cook 5 minutes more or until sausages are lightly browned and no longer pink.

Serve with your favorite two vegetables (like broccoli and carrots), a soup or salad, and warm conversation. Easy or what!? The beauty of this quick recipe is that you can keep all the ingredients on hand. I always have turkey sausage in the freezer and buy red and yellow peppers like I buy milk (meaning every week).


TIME RICH IDEAS for TIME STARVED PEOPLE

As I write, there is a gentle dusting of snowflakes falling from the Minneapolis sky. I immediately remember the lightly rippled and breathtakingly beautiful Waikiki turquoise waters where our family just returned from a January vacation.

When I actually “notice” the weather, like snowflakes or a giant thunder storm, I think of God. And how busy he is! And, I wonder how God does all this multi–tasking: creating snowflakes here in Minneapolis and sunshine in Hawaii at the same time.

When I discovered that both the kids had the same spring break, I asked them if they still go on vacation with their parents and would they want to go on a spring break vacation. Both wrote back with gratitude, “Of course, Mom, I still go on family vacations, but not on spring break.” So, with determination I planned one more, and maybe our last, family vacation.

I desired a vacation that was warm and inexpensive. I researched the Florida Keys. I discovered that warm weather is not a guarantee in January. What is the cheapest warmest place we can go? “Problem solver extraordinaire," Gary, came up with Hawaii. Oahu, notably Waikiki Beach, has been our joy since 1982 when we bought a timeshare on our honeymoon. Nothing beats a sandy seat on Waikiki Beach in front of the Pink Palace Hotel. Nothing! The kids were to plan the activities for the week, which resulted in a one activity list - lay on the beach. Ok!


A coach friend asked me “Why would you go on vacation in January, the busiest and most lucrative month of coaching?" I told him because I am time rich. You see, I believe there are two kinds of people. There are time rich people and time poor people. A delightful man came up to me after my talk on Overcoming Overwhelm at 3M and told me his time has speeded up and disappeared. He was time poor. His time was gone. He was trying to manage his 100+ emails a day and his time. I tried to explain to him that he was trying to manage his time with a clock. A waste of time!

Time rich people manage their time with their values and who they want to be. Our to-do list is endless and infinite. Our values are finite.

There are two ways I help myself “be” time rich. I picture my values as the “hats” I wear and the order I like to wear them. My “hats” are Chere, health, wife, mom, and speaking/coaching career. Click here if you want a worksheet to help you prioritize the “hats” you wear.

I also ask myself everyday, “Who do you want to be today Chere?” I want to be respected, inspired, happy, and content. How do I do that? When the “hats” I wear are aligned with my values, I feel time rich and also respected, inspired, happy and confident.

The currency of time is both physical and emotional energy. I forget that. You forget that. Think of a project you were doing at work or home that you totally disliked and it took forever and ever. By the time you were done with it you felt exhausted, unmotivated and tired. Now, think of a project that you wanted to do, even a difficult and challenging project. At the end, you were charged up and ready for more. Right? When you do projects you enjoy, the time does fly and you feel time rich.

Do you want to be time rich? I mean do you really, really want to be time rich?
The first step is to take the time and get quiet and listen to your inner wise self and feel what inspires you to get up out of bed in the morning. Then do that and dump the rest for a day. Easy? No. Few people do this. All it takes is a belief. You have a choice. Make that choice today before your time speeds up and totally disappears. It is never too late to create the life you WANT to live! Ever!
