Grandma Ady Tastes Life

How lucky am I to have Gary’s mom in my life!  She can sew anything, fix anything and can create  anything out of a piece of wood.  She is famous for her chocolate chip cookies. I think there has been only two times in 31 years her cookies were not waiting for us upon our arrival in Green Bay.  And, everyone adores her strawberry pie.

This year for the Bork family cabin reunion Brett asked if we could have Grandma Ady’s Strawberry Pie. With cabin fridge space at a premium I prepared it there. Gram and Brett have an extra special relationship. Grandpa Howard died two years ago this July and Brett has called Gram every week checking in on her. Gram knows more about Brett’s life than his mother. Gary says Brett likes it that way!

Gram Ady’s Strawberry Pie

Baked pie crust (Gram makes the best crust. I use frozen.)

Filling

Strawberries, sliced and beautifully arranged in the crust

Sauce

  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 ½ cups cold water
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 package (small) strawberry jello

Whisk together the sugar, water and cornstarch. Bring to a boil. Cook for three minutes until clear. Whisk in the package of strawberry jello until completely blended. Let cool slightly and pour over prepared strawberries in pie crust. Refrigerate several hours to set.

Yes, this recipe is loaded with sugar. It is a “Bork sometimes food” not a “Bork always food.” I usually prepare it once or twice a summer with strawberries we pick.

The best ingredient of Gram’s pie is how it makes us feel. People never forget how you make them feel.
